What Training Do Our Carers Get?

A Simple Guide for New Starters in Abingdon, Didcot & Wantage
Starting a job as a support worker (carer) is exciting but also a big step. You’ll be helping people with important parts of their daily lives — from personal care to companionship. To make sure you feel confident and ready, we provide full training and ongoing support.

At Care With Dignity Partnerships, based near Abingdon, we train every new carer so they have the skills and confidence to give safe, high-quality care across Abingdon, Didcot, and Wantage.
Why Training Matters

Good training helps you:
- Know what to do in any situation
- Feel confident in your role
- Keep service users safe, respected, and comfortable
It’s not just about rules and tick-boxes — it’s about helping you succeed and making sure families can trust the care we give.
“Training isn’t just about tick-boxes — it’s about giving carers the skills and confidence to truly make a difference every day.”
The Training You’ll Get
1. The Basics (Mandatory Training)
These are the essentials every carer needs:
- Health & Safety – safe moving/handling, hygiene, infection control
- First Aid & Basic Life Support – CPR and what to do in an emergency
- Safeguarding – spotting and reporting concerns
- Medication Support – how to safely prompt or help with medicines
- Confidentiality – keeping personal information safe
2. Specialist Skills (Extra Training)
Sometimes you’ll support service users with specific needs. We give training in:
- Dementia care
- End-of-life (palliative) care
- Mental health support
- Learning disabilities
- Long-term conditions (e.g. Parkinson’s, stroke recovery)
3. People Skills (Soft Skills)
Being a great carer is also about how you connect with people. We help you develop:
- Communication – listening and building trust
- Time management – staying organised during visits
- Resilience – looking after your own wellbeing too
The Care Certificate
All new carers in England complete the Care Certificate — 15 core standards covering everything from equality and dignity to first aid and infection control. It’s your first official step into care, showing you’re safe, skilled, and ready to work.
“The Care Certificate is the foundation for every new carer — proof that you’re safe, skilled, and ready to provide quality care.”
Learning on the Job
You won’t be thrown in at the deep end. We support you as you grow:

- Shadowing – start by joining an experienced carer on visits
- Mentoring – ongoing support from supervisors and colleagues
- Guidance – always someone to ask if you’re unsure
Ongoing Development
Training doesn’t stop once you start. We offer:

- Refresher training and workshops
- Online learning modules
- Support for formal qualifications (e.g. Diplomas in Health & Social Care)
- Opportunities to specialise and progress in your career
“Great carers never stop learning. Ongoing training helps you grow, specialise, and build a rewarding career in care.”
Why This Matters
Good training benefits everyone:

- You – you feel confident, supported, and able to grow
- Service users – they get safe, high-quality care at home
- Families – they gain peace of mind knowing their loved ones are in good hands
